Build your territory, stone by stone.
Black starts. Surround more area than your opponent on a 19×19 board; friendly games also offer 9×9 and 13×13.
Liberties and capture
A connected group needs an empty adjacent intersection, called a liberty. A group with no liberties is captured. Suicide and any move repeating a previous board position are forbidden.
Chinese area scoring
Two passes enter scoring. Select whole dead groups, then both players accept the same proposal. If you disagree, resume play. Score counts living stones plus surrounded empty area. White receives 7.5 komi; prisoners do not add area points.
